The Histogram in Your Digital Camera Explained in Plain English

August 30, 2010 // Posted in Technology (Tags: , , , , , ) |  Comments Off

I admit I am a bit of a camera nerd however I cannot stress the importance of the learning how to interpret the histogram on your digital SLR camera.

First of all, what is a histogram? This is the time to look in your camera manual and find out which controls you need to use to see it in action. Once you do this you should be able to see it after each exposure you take. Basically it is a graph that showing the distribution of the images brightness level and the brightness level of each primary color – red, green and blue.

Let’s talk about the two different types of histograms:

1) Brightness display shows the exposure level distribution, overall brightness and gradation.

The horizontal axis indicates the brightness level (darker on the left and brighter on the right) while the vertical axis indicates how many pixels exist for each brightness level. The horizontal axis represents 256 shades of gray from pure black (0) on the left to pure white (256) on the right. So the darker the image the more spikes you will have on the left and the brighter the image the more spikes you will have on the right. If the spike is too far to the left you will not have any details in the shadows and if the spikes are too far to the right you may not have detail in the highlights. This is called clipping and when you lose detail, you lose pixels which cannot sometimes be recovered. This is why I check the histogram, at least the first couple images, to see if I need to adjust my exposure.

2) RGB display shows color saturation of red, green and blue and gradation.

The horizontal and vertical axis work the same way but relate to the density of the colors. So for example, the more pixels there are to the left, the darker and less prominent the color will be and the more pixels to the right the brighter and denser the color. If the histogram shows alot of spikes on the left the respective color information could be lacking detail. If there are alot of spikes on the right, the color information could be too saturated and lacking detail.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand yet. Here is the plain English

Your digital camera can only capture 256 shades of gray from pure black to pure white. Mid-gray (and all middle tones) are in the middle. Remember black is to the left and has a value of 0 and white is to the right and has a value of 256. Mid grays have a value of 128 or so.

You should only be concerned with the right and left sides for these are the areas we have control over. I rarely check the RGB histogram as I am mainly concerned about over-exposing or under-exposing an image.

So you should be checking the brightness level histogram for clipping on the right of left side. What is clipping? Great question. Clipping is when the spike extends beyond the horizontal axis on the left or right sides. If it extends beyond the left side you are under-exposing your image and will lose detail in the shadows. If it extends beyond the right side you will lost detail in the highlights. If you lose detail you have lost pixels that cannot be recovered. (you can shoot in raw and recover some lost pixels, but that’s another article).

So what do you do if you notice the clipping. You want to make sure your subject is exposed properly. If you lose detail in the background (maybe it doesn’t have any detail) you are okay. However if lose detail (pixels) in your subject you will need to make an adjustment with your exposure and open up an f-stop for a spike off the left side and close down an f-stop for a spike to the right. Here is an example:

You are shooting in AV mode and your aperture is set to f/8. You notice a spike off the left side, you would reset your aperture to f/5.6 to open up one stop. Re-shoot the image and check your histogram and readjust if necessary. If you notice the spike to the right you would reset your aperture to f/11.

I hope that all makes sense. You can experiment with different backgrounds and learn how to read your histogram on your own digital SLR camera.

Digital SLR Camera versus a Compact Digital Camera

August 30, 2010 // Posted in Technology (Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ) |  Comments Off

Digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras are excellent cameras that produce clearer, sharper and more colourful images than most point and shoot digital cameras available. With prices falling rapidly, they are now more affordable then ever. With the price gap between an entry model digital SLR camera and the most expensive compact digital camera narrowing; the question is… do I spend the extra money and get a Digital SLR camera? or save a few hundred dollars and purchase the best digital compact camera.

Well, it really depends on your budget; however if you do spend the extra money, here’s what you get:

In addition to the price falls in the Digital SLR models, the performance on these cameras has increased year on year with the latest Digital SLR cameras being quicker and faster than ever before. They have improved to such an extent that power up or start-up time is near instantaneous with virtually no lag time. “Lag time is the time between you pressing the shutter release button and the camera actually taking the shot”. This delay can vary quite a bit between different camera models and it is one of the biggest drawbacks compared to a compact digital camera. The latest digital SLR cameras have virtually no lag times and react in the same way as conventional film cameras, even in burst mode. Compact digital cameras are catching up; however the difference is still significant. A lag time of ~0.5 seconds can result in you missing the heartbeat of the moment and hence that potential great picture.

Digital SLR camera also has a larger sensor versus a smaller sensor in a compact digital camera. This equates to higher sensitivity and less noise and results in the camera taking clearer pictures in low light. (They also have better autofocus speed in low light as well). A measure of sensitivity in a digital camera is ISO and a typical ISO range for a Digital SLR camera varies from ISO 100 – 1600 with the latter being more sensitive. The ISO range for a compact digital camera varies from ISO 50 – 400. In summary, the higher the ISO rating, the greater the sensitivity and the better the photo can be taken in low light.

The Digital SLR cameras have a much longer battery life due to the limited use of the LCD screen. Please note, that as the LCD screen is only used for viewing the image, the battery life of a digital SLR can allow up to 2000 shots per charge in some cameras compared to 500 for a good point and shoot digital camera.

Digital SLR cameras also allow you to interchange lens such as adding a zoom or macro lens when required.

On the negative side of a Digital SLR camera; They are usually larger and heavier than compact digital cameras, the image cannot be previewed on the LCD screen prior taking the picture. If you really require the image to be viewed on the LCD prior to taking the picture, there are third party manufacturers that produce LCD screens that attaches to the viewfinder and allow the scene to be view just like a compact digital camera. The other drawback is the inability to take videos and finally, lenses are expensive with the majority costing more than the camera itself.

Although compact digital cameras cannot compete on features with a Digital SLR camera, they are great value, have the ability to take videos and are portable. If you have decided to purchase a Digital SLR camera I recommend you visit http://www.infodigitalcamera.com to find additional information on Digital SLR camera. If you are still undecided, purchase both.

Internet Marketing – Past Present Future

August 29, 2010 // Posted in Internet (Tags: , , , , , , , , ) |  Comments Off

“Believe the hype. The Internet and the World Wide Web have become the most important new communication media since television, and ones that are fundamentally reshaping contemporary understanding of sales and marketing.” – Jim Sterne. During the last part of the 1990s, the Internet boom saw all kinds of brand new companies that were developing services and products that literally capitalized on the Internet’s potential.

Unfortunately, the push-to-market often resulted in very poor planning and many business models failed to include realistic and profitable business objectives. When the year 2000 ended, many of the above mentioned companies closed their doors. After this black period, the surviving and the new opened companies realized that the web-based strategies and techniques must be taken into consideration just like any other classic marketing tools. The basic questions regarding marketing must still be answered, some of them are:

o Are the business models realistic?

o Who are the customers?

o Which mix marketing strategies are efficient?

o What is the competition doing?

Besides these traditional issues, the internet marketing world had other things to offer:

o Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) – considered by many to be the most cost-effective method for attracting visitors to a website by getting that website listed on top search engines and directories. This method asked many crucial questions, such as: How can this be accomplished in an efficient way? On-site or off-site optimization? Which keywords are most efficient?

o Pay Per Click Advertising ( PPC ) – the quickest and easiest method to create instant online presence. All PPC campaigns can be created and launched within 2 weeks and the costs are determined by the keyword search volume and the keyword market value. The most important question regarding this method is: How to ensure that owners get the most return on their investment?

o E-Mail Marketing – a custom newsletter design which is combined with a very powerful e-mail management system that sends engaging e-mail, promotions, newsletters, which will stand out above the rest, is one marketing method. Questions raised by this method are: What is a drip campaign? What is an auto-responder?

o Advanced Web Statistics – this method brings more information besides the basic question of how many hits the site receives. These statistics allow owners to measure vital information in a very easy matter, some of the info includes: Where are the visitors coming from? How long do they stay on the website? Which pages are the most popular among visitors? Which of the pages cause visitors to exit the website? The most important issue regarding this method is diagnosing the problem areas and determining the results of a campaign.

In the future, websites will be more personalized, as they will cater to consumers and niche markets. Internet marketing through audio newsletters will probably become a more accessible tool for targeted audiences. Other predictions made by experts regarding the future of Internet Marketing are:

o 50% of experts affirm that anonymous, free, music file sharing on P2P (peer-to-peer) networks will still be easy to perform a decade from now

o 59 % of experts agreed with a prediction that more and more business and government surveillance will occur as computing devices proliferate and become embedded in appliances, phones, clothes and cars

o 56% of experts agreed that as telecommuting and home-schooling expand, the boundary between leisure and work will reduce and family dynamics will change due to this reason

o 57% of experts agreed that virtual classes will become more widespread in formal education and that students might, at least occasionally, be grouped with others who share their interests and skills, rather than by age

All things considered, Internet Marketing is one of the most important aspects of the Internet world and many people are considering that this domain will have a very long future, along with the Internet. All website owners will have to take into consideration at least one Internet Marketing technique.

Digital SLR Camera Sensor Cleaning

August 29, 2010 // Posted in Technology (Tags: , , , ) |  Comments Off

DSLR camera sensor cleaning is a bit of a mystery. A black art if you like. I’m not entirely sure it deserved to be because if you are smart enough to use a DSLR, you’re smart enough to remove sensor dust. The only issue is you may not be able to due to time, confidence or being in possession of the right equipment such as the visible dust arctic butterfly.

It needs to be tackled carefully though, and with the right equipment for the sensor size which you have. This you need to be aware of as it dictate the type of swab you use.

Another mystery worth pointing out with ’sensor cleaning’ is that you don’t actually clean the camera sensor. You clean a thin piece of glass (for want of a better word) which sits over the sensor. This is called the low-pass filter. Its a delicate little thing but not as delicate as a dslr camera sensor.

Another thing to point out before you start is make sure you have a memory card in the camera, because you will need to take test shots, and make sure you have a fully charged battery. You do not want it powering off while you’re performing your camera cleaning because a mirror shutting down on top of a sensor swab or an arctic butterfly can prove to be an expensive mistake. This goes for whether you’re using a professional service or if you are cleaning your own sensor.

So now you have the right equipment to hand and you have you’re camera all ready to go you might think about laying your hands on a Sensor loupe. This acts as a scope (lit magnifying glass in other words) for you to clearly see any dirt, sensor dust or smears on your sensor.

A complete list of the equipment you should have to hand is. Sensor Loupe, Sensor swab for your sensor size, Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly, Hurricane Blower, lint free cloth, fully charged battery in your camera, memory card (for test shots) and a steady hand (ok, and possibly a lenspen as a general SLR cleaning tool, but not imperative by any stretch of the imagination)

There is a process here that you may have to repeat a few times and that hinges on how much dirt is on the sensor, how much is loose within the camera body and why type of smears 9if any) there are on the camera.

DSLR Camera sensor cleaning, for most of us, has always been something of a mystery. One might often feel it necessary to clean one’s sensor, but on the whole, we are all told it isn’t sensible. A ‘don’t-try-this-at-home’ act, if you will. Through this article I plan to dispel some myths about sensor cleaning in the hope that you will feel more comfortable about obtaining Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly and swabs and removing sensor dust.

Peter Bond at Park Cameras (who taught me to clean sensors) provides an excellent description of this process in his article Digital SLR Camera Sensor Cleaning. Here he outlines the whole process from start to finish including how to determine the need for cleaning. If after this you don’t fancy doing your own the simple answer is to refer it to a professional sensor cleaning service who will price separately for either a cropped sensor cleaning service or for a full frame sensor cleaning service.

Energy Cost Considerations to Running a Big Screen TV

August 28, 2010 // Posted in Technology (Tags: , , , ) |  Comments Off

Energy usage to running a big screen TV are usually not a top priority on most peoples minds, but times are tough and understanding you monthly budgeting costs is very important. Buying a new big screen TV will affect your electric bills for years to come. Home heating and cooling systems, along with lighting and your major home appliances will account for much of your energy consumption, but big screen TVs are no laughing matter when it comes to consuming your energy resources. Some sizes and types, particularly plasma, use more electricity than an energy efficient refrigerator.

Engineers have now determined the energy used by a typical LCD, plasma, and rear-projection TVs turned on for 8 hours a day, 365 days a year. Yes, that is the typical usage a U.S. household watches television annually. Most sets did not use much more energy than a 32- to 36-inch picture tube TV. But 50-inch plasmas with 1080p screen resolution used twice as much energy as the biggest picture tube set and more than a comparable LCD TVs.

It’s obvious that bigger screens of any type television will consume more electricity than smaller models. And, its important to know that with LCD and rear-projection TVs, screen resolution has almost no affect on energy consumption because all the pixels in the screen are illuminated by the same backlight. However, with plasma sets, 1080p models will use more energy than the 720p models. This is due to the fact that 1080p sets have many more pixels, each of which is illuminated separately. With LCD sets a key factor is, the higher the backlight setting, the more electricity it will use. Just a few numbers to help you understand, a newer 20-cu.-ft refrigerator cost approximately $50 annually to run, and a 50-inch 1080p plasma set costs approximately $110 annually. (These numbers are based on the Department of Energy’s 2007 national average pricing for energy.)

Even if the cost differences of a few dollars a month don’t matter much to your budgeting needs, keep in mind that the millions of TVs used in American households consume a huge amount of energy. There is definitely an environmental advantage to using a more energy efficient TV set.
